St
Joseph's Lower Primary school, Cheriakadavu is located at
a coastal, remote, rural village in Chellanam Grama
Panchayath. Cheriakadavu is the strip of land between the
Arabian Sea and the Vembanad Lake. Mr Kunju Ouso son of Mr
Sauri Mestri Muttungal, a rich man of the locality donated
the land and financed the construction of the building to
be used as class rooms. The classes started on 10th August
1889. The school was dedicated to the patron saint of
workers, St Joseph. The people of the village were strong
devotees of St Joseph. The school was started nearby the
chapel of St Joseph.
The first school building
had 4 class rooms with well elevated roof and spacious
plinth area facilities. The first headmaster of the school
was Padmanabha Panicker. The Management and the ownership
was with the family of Mr Kunju Ouso Muttungal. In 1927 an
extension was made with 3 more class rooms. From 1912 the
assistant priest of the St. Louis church, Mundamvely used
to come here for the Sunday masses subsequently the care
and the management of the school was given to St. Louis
church, Mundamvely. When the parish of St. Joseph's
Cheriakadavu was erected, the school came under the
parish. St. Joseph's Lower Primary school continues her
great and committed service to the poor children of the
locality. |
