History

St George High School, located at Thankey is part of Kadakkarapally Panchayath, in the Cherthala Taluk of Alleppey district, Kerala, India. The majority of the people are financially, educationally and socially backward. They are occupied with fishing, coir-works and other traditional jobs. According to tradition, the name Thankey originated from a Portuguese word Tank meaning wetly, watery and muddy land. There was a Kudipallikoodam and an English school under the administration of the Parish of St. Mary's Thankey before the establishment of St Mary's Lower Primary school in 1915. Mr. Eravi Sankara Kurup was the first headmaster of the school. Later in 1948 the school was upgraded to an Upper Primary school with the name St George's Upper Primary school. The name St. George's Upper Primary school was a token of gratitude to the dedicated service of Rev Fr George Karott, who was the Parish Priest of Thankey Parish. As per the decision of the Government the Lower primary and upper primary sections were joined together and it was named St George's Upper Primary school. In 1976 the school was upgraded to a High school. The school continued to contribute to the integral development of the people of the area. The school building was newly constructed in the year 2015 as the memorial of the centenary celebration.
